PART 1 — Flower Center
-
Make a magic ring.
-
Inside the ring: 12 single crochet.
-
Pull tight and join with a slip stitch.
-
Next row: In every stitch, work 2 single crochet (24 stitches total).
-
Join with a slip stitch and do not cut the yarn.
This is your flat center.
Optional: For the little bumps seen in the picture — work one round of single crochet in the back loops only.
This creates a ridge to anchor petals behind.
PART 2 — Petals (worked in layers)
We create 3 rounds of petals, each slightly longer.
Round 1 Petals (small inner row)
Repeat around:
-
Chain 5
-
In the same stitch: 1 single crochet, 3 half double crochet, 1 single crochet, all worked along the chain itself
-
Skip one stitch
-
Slip stitch into the next stitch
You will see small oval petals form in a circle.
Round 2 Petals (mid-size)
Turn the flower over:
You’ll see unused loops behind the petals.
Into each loop:
-
Chain 6
-
Work 1 single crochet, 1 half double crochet, 3 double crochet, 1 half double crochet, 1 single crochet along the chain
-
Skip the space between loops
-
Slip stitch into the next loop
This layer should sit slightly behind and under the first.
Round 3 Petals (largest outer row)
Same idea, but longer:
-
Chain 7
-
Work 1 sc – 2 hdc – 4 dc – 2 hdc – 1 sc along the chain
-
Slip stitch into the next back loop
Continue around.
You now have the full dahlia bloom shape.
Cut yarn, weave ends.
PART 3 — Stem
Use green yarn.
-
Chain 35–45 (whatever length feels right).
-
Turn, single crochet all the way back.
-
Make it double-thickness:
-
Chain again the same length
-
Single crochet back
-
Sew the two strips together (twist slightly for realism)
-
Optional: Insert floral wire while sewing to make the stem poseable.
PART 4 — Leaves (make 2)
-
Chain 9
-
Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook:
-
1 single crochet
-
1 half double crochet
-
1 double crochet
-
1 double crochet
-
1 half double crochet
-
1 single crochet
-
In the last chain: 3 single crochet around the end to turn.
-
-
Work back up the other side of the chain:
Mirror the stitches exactly. -
Slip stitch at the beginning to close.
-
To make the vein:
-
Chain 1
-
Single crochet in a straight line up the center
-
Fasten off.
-
Sew the leaves to either side of the stem.
Shaping
Press lightly with steam hovering, do NOT fully press flat.
Just let fibers relax and petals open.
Good Luck!
